Rails: Toes dipped and The Water is Fine

Okay, so, as noted in my previous post, I was going full steam at rails. It has been about a week and I have my tutorials working, my Lynda and Treehouse accounts fired up…but even as went at it full go, I found myself caught in a snag. Time after time. After hours and hours enduring various training videos and online tutorials, I could follow along just fine, but it occurred to me that I was not “learning” anything. Although I could do the task, in the end, I did not understand what I was doing. I mean, there was only so many times some person on a video could tell me some word I have never heard of without explaining what it was. So, my paid accounts, like Lynda and Treehouse, sent me running to the web, hitting Stack Overflow and other places to get explanations. It wasn’t until I landed on http://ruby.railstutorial.org/, that everything sort of clicked. http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ takes you through the process of app creation to deployment…and best of all, it EXPLAINS what you are doing. So far, http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ has been an invaluable tool. I am now, glad to say, not just a handsome fellow, but one who has an app on git and Heroku.

Fist pump.

  • Cebo,
Glad to see you enjoying ruby! I haven’t been to that site, but I will check it out. Thanks!

  • Hi Cebo,
How is your rails going? I just started learning Ruby on Rails a few months ago and am really enjoying how it works. The only issue I had is deploying to Heroku.

Yeah, Heroku was a little tricky. But, I have enjoyed it so far. It is fun for me to sort of stretch out and learn something completely foreign to me. But the rails community has been really responsive in helping. I have already started building my own applications. In your first few months, have you made anything yet?

About

I am an author and a Creative Director. My latest books are:

Sky Full of Elephants – coming 2024

Violet in Some Places – Available at Not A Cult

As a full-time creative (Chief Creative Officer at Spherical), I spend most days at the desk leading a team of creatives to brand some of the best hotels in the world. So, I write in the nooks and crannies of my available time. I wake up at 5:30am just to get in a few hours putting words on paper. I write on the train. I write on planes. I write waiting in lines. I feel I have to write. The reason is simple: representation.

Cebo Campbell Author of Violet in Some Places

I often tell the story of Ferris Bueller; a kid who decides to skip school and, on charm alone, steals a car, impersonates a cop, drinks underage, tampers with computers, and at every step exposes his best friends to peril, only to go home and fall asleep with his mother to kiss him into sweet dreams. I asked myself if Ferris were Trayvon Martin, how might that story end? I know the answer. So do you. And this is why representation is so important. I aim to contribute more stories into the world that diversely feature regular (but beautiful) lives made extraordinary. Art, I believe, is the only way to accomplish this. All my creative work is inspired by and aims to add to all the great work in the world.
